The Michael Saunders Mural Wall is a large-scale public art installation located at the corner of Orange Street and Main Street in downtown Sarasota. Spanning nearly 100 feet, the mural functions as a walking timeline that traces the development of the Sarasota Artist Colony from 1945 to 1965, placing local artistic achievement within the broader cultural evolution of the city.
Conceived as both artwork and historical narrative, the mural highlights key artists, institutions, and moments that shaped Sarasota’s postwar creative identity. The installation integrates imagery, text, and archival references, inviting viewers to move through time as they physically move along the wall.
The mural is permanently installed within the walls of the Michael Saunders Company building, embedding Sarasota’s artistic legacy directly into the contemporary urban landscape. By situating history in a highly visible public space, the project creates an accessible point of engagement for residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the city’s longstanding relationship with the visual arts
